Things to do in and around Barmah

Barmah is a small town of 200 people on the Murray River 3 hours north of Melbourne, 45 minutes north of Shepparton and only 20 minutes east of Echuca.

The town and its people are very relaxed and friendly. Traffic is slow & low. There is no supermarket in Barmah.

Bushwalking
Barmah National Park is on the eastern edge of the town and is the start of the 21,000 hectare redgum forest. The largest redgum forest in the world has many walking tracks that emanate from near the Kingfisher Cruises mooring and the Dharnya Cultural Center.
There are also many tracks along the rivers edge with some magnificent river redgums along the way.

Because we live in this area we do suggest.
That you bring an insect repellant.
There are snakes in the area like most other areas in Australia! Be aware.
Given the right weather conditions it is easy to become dehydrated. Carry liquids to drink.
If you are going off the beaten track please ensure you have a compass and a map.
Inform someone where you intend going and when you intend to return. The area is vast and if you leave the beaten track it is easy to become lost.

Fishing
It is synonymous with the Murray River and it doesn't get any better than at Barmah, particularly at the Barmah - Moira forest where the river narrows, or down stream at Torrumberry where it is wide & deep. Depending on your skills you could have a Murray Cod, Yellow Belly, Bream, or even a Red Fin on your plate for dinner! Then again, sitting on the bank relaxing with a cold beer waiting for a tug on the line could be just what you need to get rid of the stress of City life.
